Preaching the Cross against the Albigensians: The Textual Evidence

This talk, followed by a book launch, will introduce the recent Oxford Medieval Texts volume: Philip the Chancellor and Eudes of Châteauroux, Nine Sermons on Crusade and Heresy, 1226-1231. The sermons preached in the context of the Albigensian crusade of 1226 are unique because they are the only source texts for the preaching of the cross which are precisely dated and attributed to specific preaching events by their manuscripts. But the relationship of the extant written versions and the historical oral discourse is far from straight forward. An examination of these texts provides some fundamental insights into the process of recording sermons in the Middle Ages and thus the nature of our evidence. The audience is invited to join the book launch at the IHR straight after the talk.
